Practical insights on K–12 admissions, school marketing, and how AI is changing enrollment — delivered when we publish.
ESAs are surfacing hundreds of thousands of families who've never considered private school before. Most independent school websites are not built for them.
The First-Generation Private School Family Is Your Fastest-Growing Cohort
The fastest-growing applicant cohort at independent K-12 schools in 2025-26 is families who have no prior personal experience with private education. ESA expansion is the largest single driver. The number of students participating in school choice programs hit 1.3 million in 2025, up 25% in a year.
What first-generation looks like at the inquiry stage
- Tuition questions land first, and they don't go away easily — they haven't yet internalized financial aid or indexed tuition models
- They don't know what to ask on a tour — 'what is the difference between your school and the public school?' is a first question
- They are uncertain about etiquette — they worry about asking the wrong question or dressing wrong for a tour
- They make decisions on a different timeline — often running later in the cycle, post-ESA-approval
Why most school websites under-serve them
Independent school websites are almost universally written for the family that already chose private education. They lead with brand, selectivity signals, and words like 'rigor,' 'tradition,' and 'heritage' — without explaining what those look like in practice on a Tuesday morning in March. For the family figuring out whether they belong in this world, it's missing. If a school's first-touch experience makes a first-generation family feel like they're in the wrong place, they leave. Not noisily. They simply close the tab and don't come back.
Three changes that move the needle
- Lead with cost transparency — a page titled 'Affording Westridge' with three clear scenarios is more useful than a viewbook with a discreet tuition link in the footer
- Use plain English for everything — rewrite in the voice you'd use with a friend who'd never considered private school
- Give them a way to ask without committing — a guided conversational experience without surrendering contact info moves them through the consideration window
First-generation families who have a great experience tend to become extraordinary ambassadors. They didn't grow up in independent education — they chose it. When they're happy, they tell other families considering the same leap.
