Practical insights on K–12 admissions, school marketing, and how AI is changing enrollment — delivered when we publish.
Inquiry to tour to application to enrollment benchmarks for independent K-12 schools — and where a 10-point lift on a single stage rewrites your whole admissions year.
The Inquiry-to-Enrollment Math Most Schools Aren't Doing
Most independent schools can tell you their enrollment number from memory. Many can tell you their inquiry number. Far fewer can describe what happens between the two. The admissions funnel is a sequence of four conversion rates, multiplied together.
The four stages and the benchmark numbers
- Visitor to inquiry: ~2% at most schools, 5%+ at top performers
- Inquiry to tour booked: 40–50%
- Tour to application: 60–70%
- Application to enrollment: 75–85%
A school with 10,000 website visitors: 10,000 visitors → 200 inquiries (2%) → 90 tours (45%) → 60 applications (65%) → 48 enrollments (80%). That last number — 48 enrolled families from 10,000 visitors — is a 0.48% website-to-enrollment conversion rate. That is the number nobody talks about.
Why the top of the funnel is the highest-leverage point
Doubling the inquiry rate — moving from 2% to 4% — nearly doubles enrollments. Moving tour-show or application rates by a similar relative amount produces a much smaller absolute lift, because the cohort downstream is already small. The inquiry stage is the gate. If the gate is narrow, every later improvement is operating on a smaller and smaller pool.
Why most schools focus on the wrong stages
Admissions teams tend to spend effort on stages they can see: tour follow-up scripts, parent essay coaching, financial aid conversations. The trouble is that those stages already convert at 60–85%. They are not where the bleeding is. The bleeding is at the top — between visitor and inquiry — and it is invisible because the families lost there never become rows in your CRM.
The math, rerun
Lift only the visitor-to-inquiry rate, from 2% to 4%: 10,000 visitors → 400 inquiries → 180 tours → 117 applications → ~94 enrollments. The school nearly doubled its enrolled class without buying any additional traffic. For a school with $32,000 tuition, that is the difference between roughly $1.5 million and $3 million in tuition revenue.
