Practical insights on K–12 admissions, school marketing, and how AI is changing enrollment — delivered when we publish.

NAIS pegs the median cost per inquiry at $697 and cost per enrollment at $3,677. Here's what those numbers actually mean when most of your website traffic vanishes.

The Real Cost of a Silent Website

Every Head of School has seen the marketing line item creep up. Here is the part that rarely makes it into the trustee deck: according to NAIS data, the median cost per inquiry (CPI) at independent schools is roughly $697, and the median cost per enrollment (CPE) is $3,677.

The 98% you are already paying to attract

The typical private school website conversion rate is under 2%. That means for every 100 families who land on your website, fewer than two will fill out an inquiry form. The other 98 read a tuition page, click through to Athletics, wonder how financial aid works, and leave without ever telling you they were there.

Your $697 inquiry didn't actually cost $697. It cost $697 per family who told you their name. The actual cost per family lost is much, much higher — because lost families don't show up in the spreadsheet at all.

What gets counted, and what doesn't

The standard CPI calculation: marketing spend divided by inquiry-form submissions. The problem is the denominator measures families who self-identified at the bottom of the funnel before a single one of their questions was answered. Most families never make it that far.

Two numbers worth running for your school

  1. Cost per visitor seen, not per inquiry. Take your annual admissions marketing spend and divide it by your total website sessions.
  2. Cost per silent visitor. If you converted 1.5% to inquiries, roughly 98.5% of sessions ended in silence — you paid the same amount to attract them.

Why "lead capture" is the wrong frame

The 98% who leave are not unwilling — they are unhelped. Research on parent decision journeys consistently shows that families spend 12–18 months researching schools before committing. During the early stretches of that journey, almost no parent wants to fill out a form. They want to have a conversation — if the conversation feels like a tour rather than a sales call.

The math, rerun

If your CPI is $697 and you double your inquiry rate from 2% to 4%, your CPI roughly halves. The quieter result is more important: you also doubled the number of families your team gets to talk to this year, without buying any additional traffic. If your CPE is $3,677, and one new family enrolls at $32,000 of tuition, that single family more than covers the cost of the system that helped surface them.
