Practical insights on K–12 admissions, school marketing, and how AI is changing enrollment — delivered when we publish.

Texas's $10K ESA and Tennessee's $7K Education Freedom Act add hundreds of thousands of net-new private school families. Your admissions funnel was not designed for them.

Universal ESAs in Texas and Tennessee Just Rewired Your Funnel

In 2025, Texas passed SB 2, establishing a universal ESA program with families receiving $10,000 per student annually. Tennessee passed the Education Freedom Act of 2025, creating a universal ESA worth $7,000 per student. Overall, US students participating in school choice programs reached approximately 1.3 million by July 2025 — a single-year increase of about 25%.

The new family looks different

  • Many are first-time private school families who don't know what 'shadow day' means
  • They are price-comparing differently — ESA covers part but not all of the tuition gap
  • They evaluate against microschools, hybrid programs, and virtual schools — not just other independent schools
  • They often arrive late in the cycle, as ESA eligibility timelines don't align with traditional admissions calendars

Why the standard admissions experience misfires

Independent school admissions processes were designed for a previous applicant type: families who already understood what an independent school was. That design includes assumptions that don't translate — the 15-field inquiry form, the viewbook-PDF download, the 'schedule a tour' CTA that goes to a calendar with no context.

What admissions offices should be changing now

  1. Audit your tuition page — first-time families will land there and need plain-English cost explanations including ESA stacking
  2. Build a guided first-touch experience — a proactive, conversational entry point that surfaces the right next step
  3. Pre-qualify gently — ESA dollars don't fully cover most independent school tuition
  4. Reset your seasonal cadence — ESA timing means late applicants; build a workflow that handles a family in July with the same care as one in November

The pool is bigger than the demographic cliff alone would suggest, and the families in it are different. Schools that read the new applicant profile carefully and rebuild their first-touch experience will quietly take share from the schools that don't.
